Project Background

Established in 2015 following the successful completion of the Staffordshire Area Improvements Programme, the East West Rail Alliance, consisting of partners Atkins, Network Rail, Volker Rail, and Laing O’Rourke, aims to re-establish a rail link between Oxford and Cambridge, improve connections between East Anglia and central, southern, and western England, deliver the project in three distinct sections phased over time, and complete phase two of the Western section, connecting Bicester to Bedford.

Project Scope

The East West Rail Alliance Project delivered a substantial volume of infrastructure milestones:

  • Earthworks totalling 1 million cubic meters.
  • Installation of 100 km of new track and drainage.
  • Construction of 2 new stations.
  • Extension of 3 platforms.
  • Construction of 15 new bridges.
  • Refurbishment of 23 bridges.
  • Demolition of 4 bridges.
  • Installation of 130 km of new fencing.

The EWRA established strong working relationships with local authorities, supported by the EWR Consortium, enabling the project to exceed typical performance benchmarks.
