This summer, more than ever, it is important to look out for each other and be aware of potential dangers to ensure that we all stay safe in the sun and get home safely every day.

For the Rail Industry, the temperature is critical in the summer months and is monitored to avoid “buckling” of the track. Rail worker temperature is just as critical. Make sure you stay focused.

Remember to take on plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated all throughout the summer months, especially on those hotter days.

Make sure you take care of your skin and use sun cream on exposed skin. Site security and infrastructure access points must be controlled to prevent unauthorised access from members of the public and children during school holidays.

Did you know….?

  • There is an increased risk of fire from Hot Works and burning activities. Ensure control measures are planned to prevent a fire from sparks or heat resources. Firefighting equipment must be located at the point of work for these reasons.
  • Sun glare has contributed to an average of 28 road deaths per year in the UK since 2010. This includes pedestrians.
  • Network Rail’s alcohol limit is one-third of the England and Wales drink-drive limit.
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern and is currently estimated to affect up to 2 million people in the UK.
  • Trespassing on railway tracks is at a 10 year high.
  • People are twice as likely to trespass on the tracks over the summer – you should make sure you know if the railway you are working on is a trespassing hotspot.

Our Infrastructure Director, Rob, completed the British 10k run in Westminster to raise money for the charity Pump Aid. He had a £100 target and has now raised £170!

Pump Aid work with some of the poorest and hardest to reach communities in the world and provide two of life’s basic needs; safe water and proper sanitation.

Their current programmes consist of working with local partners to increase access to clean water, sanitation, and nutrition in preschools in Malawi, improving the life chances of some of the world’s most poverty-stricken children.

They are working on expanding access to clean, safe and reliable sources of drinking water for greater numbers of rural communities in Malawi.

Another project of theirs is to educate. They have community facilitators who have been working closely with villages across some of the most remote areas of rural Malawi to improve health and sanitation among households. They guide conversations with communities to help them understand the behaviours that lead to illnesses that cause death, disability and stunted development. Educating the communities to implement simple measures in and around their homes.

They have also been trialling a different approach to reducing water poverty by bringing in a project called Self-supply, which involves training and mentoring local entrepreneurs to equip them with the skills they need to set up viable business to build sustainable water capacity in their own communities.
In just 12 months, over 20,000 people in poor rural communities have gained access to secure, sustainable water for communal, individual and farming use. Establishing local supply businesses has helped make water pumps in rural areas more sustainable, as well as creating more social and economic opportunities for the entrepreneurs, involved in our programme, and their wider communities. This entrepreneurial approach has trained local tradespeople, such as welders and metal workers to build, repair and maintain water pumps.

Advance TRS had a brilliant time at their Summer Conference on Friday 29th June. We worked with local businesses to organise a day for the whole company that incorporated looking back at what the company has achieved over the last year, looking forward to our goals for the future and then some team building!

The main conference was held within the fantastic facilities at G Live in Guildford. We then had local company, Containment Zone, organise a team building exercise in the form of a scavenger hunt in the afternoon. We were split into teams who were competing against each other, completing various challenges in and around Guildford Town!

This was then followed by drinks at the Guildford Harbour Hotel and then the Guildford Tup. A great day was had by all and we look forward to next years already!
